Now, more than ever, our schools need to be prepared for natural disasters. HB665 would create a disaster preparedness fund with the purpose of funding schools in high risk areas to improve or replace existing school structures to lessen future damage.
HB885 aims to eliminate the school to prison pipeline and support NC students. Studies show that children who attend schools with higher suspension rates are more likely to be arrested as adults, especially Black and Hispanic boys. This bill would prohibit corporal punishment in public schools and allow students to appeal disciplinary actions taken against them, like in-school suspension or out-of-school suspension. It also requires that a student's guardian be notified of any suspension and that students are able to keep up with their course load during that time.
No school should be allowed to use corporal punishment and no school teacher or administrator should be required to administer corporal punishment. HB983 would ban this practice statewide.
